San Antonio’s newest farmer’s market at Éilan, aptly named Ripe, inspires new cultural connections and culinary experiences within the community. Located in La Cantera, Ripe features products, flavors, and vendors sure to please Austinites and San Antonians alike.
My family enjoyed delicious paletas from Ms. Chocolatier, breakfast croissants and rosemary ciabatta bread from Sol y Luna, and fresh strawberry lemonade at The Lemonade Co. I had to stop for fresh arugula at Johnson’s Backyard Farm, visit with local food trucks before heading out.
We visited the final summer premiere for Ripe on Sunday, August 18. The market opens on a weekly basis after September 8, 2013.
Inside the Éilan Hotel you’ll find Sustenio, a restaurant venture from Texas Chef Steven Pyles. Sustenio is known for its delicious, Southwestern inspired foods, and offers brunch to guests and visitors every Sunday. Restaurant Manager Philippe Place and Chef Kyle Barham demonstrated a few Sustenio recipes for a hungry crowd of marketgoers.
Dallas Chef Kyle Barham created gazpacho rojo with smoked tomatoes, while the talented Phillipe Place prepared passion chile margaritas for the crowd. Place emphasized the difference in quality between store-bought mixes and fresh ingredients. “A pre-mix? That’s not happening.”
I’ve included Sustenio’s Passion Chile Margarita recipe: the perfect Texas summer cooler.
Directions: Mix all ingredients for margarita together in a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously.
Moisten the rim of cocktail glass with lime and coat with equal parts sugar and salt. Strain the margarita into the glass and garnish with a jalapeño chile.
Sustenio is participating in Culinaria’s Restaurant week, and the menu is sure to be amazing. Between August 17-24, participating restaurants, food trucks, and pop-ups will offer 3 course, prix-fixe lunch menus for $15, and dinner specials for $35. I’ll be visiting Sustenio for lunch later this week, so stay posted with me on Twitter and Instagram! Happy Eating!
